Routes of Enslavement in the Americas: A Conference

“This conference gathers faculty and graduate students participating in the MRPI [UC Office of the President, Multicampus Research Programs and Initiatives] project “Routes of Enslavement in the Americas,” a research collaboration led by professors Alex Borucki (UCI), Greg O'Malley (UCSC), and Sabrina Smith (UCM). The project focuses on three research areas: 1) inter-regional movements of African and African-descended captives within colonial Mexico (including California and other parts of what is now the United States and Central America), 2) exploration of the Black Pacific Worlds through coastal trafficking routes connecting ports in California, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Chile, and 3) Caribbean migrations (both coerced and voluntary) of African-descended populations, between islands and with the mainland Americas.”

I will be presenting “‘[T]he dame was the actual owner of the craft’: Female Ship Owners in the Slave Voyages Database,” which is based on portions of my second book project, Women of the Trade. I will share this work during the first panel of the conference, which takes place on Friday, October 17, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
